Reaction Paper:

Project 2 was a great project in my opinion. For phase A: Altered Book I chose to go with something abstract and I really love how it came out. I thought the book was easy to work with and the results came out great. I understand where other people were coming from though when they had a specific plan and had trouble getting the outcome they desired. I think for the book phase of this serial planes project it was better to be more abstract and not have a plan to get results that you were happy with. I think that people had more trouble with cutting the book as well, but I didn't end up cutting mine that much. The parts that I did cut though were tough and didn't come exactly the way I expected.
The second phase of this project was also really interesting. I made a design based off a hotel that I found when i was searching through architecture while doing my research. I found a lot of great research images to spark some ideas for this phase of the project. I came across other students work which was really interesting and unique. Personally I think the foam core used for this part of the project was more challenging to work with because it didn't come out great after cutting.
I learned a bunch of things from these two phases of the serial planes project. I learned about using these different materials and how to work with them well. It was really interesting, in my opinion, to work with a book rather than a material that one would normally use to create a sculpture. It was an interesting way to use an old book. I think I also learned about the difference between having a planned out idea and a more abstract thought as to how my project would turn out. The results can be very different and it was very creative and unique.

  1. Your approach to both phases in the serial planes project was very creative. Aesthetically quite different outcomes, but both were successful in transforming flat surfaces into 3d compositions in which you explores repetitions and gradations to achieve mass and volume and yet incorporating an interesting interplay of positive and negative space.

In the case of the altered book project, it is an interesting piece; lucid and creative take in the treatment of text monochromatic pages in relation to the color ones. Yet, as we have talked during the critique, in relation to solving the problem presented, the structure of the book still remains.

Good documentation of both processes. You may though take some images of final outcome on the backgrounds set in the classroom, exploring the different lighting and shadows casts from different perspectives. Particularly the foam board piece has a lot of potential in that regard.
