In my opinion, creativity isn't something only some stumble upon, it's inside everyone. Some just may have to dig deeper to find it. Whether one is an artist or just someone doodling in a notebook, everyone has creativity in them no matter how one chooses to show it. I believe that creativity and critical thinking are important for everyone to develop and use in their daily lives. That is one of the reasons why I chose a creative career. I love expressing who I am through my creative side and exploring new ways of using creativity in my life. Interior design has been one of my passions for years now and the creativity one needs to express in that field is immense. I believe the idea of expressing an individual's creativity in something as simple as their own house or commercial space is so unique and inspiring. The possibilities are endless and expressing any of these possibilities is what makes everyone different.
When we were given the first project "Anything but a Box", I had no idea where to start. Nothing came to mind right away when the project was discussed so I really had to think. I gave it a couple days and tossed around different ideas, but never really found one that seemed perfect. I started looking outside at one point during those couple days and realized how much I would love to be at the beach. So then I thought maybe I could make my box into something involving the beach. After drawing a couple similar sketches I decided that a small island in the water with a palm tree sort of feel was the direction I wanted to go. The next day I started by cutting off all the pieces that had packing tape on them. I wanted to use those pieces as the water, so I kept them all together. Once I did that there were lots of holes in the box and I wasn't sure where to go next. I figured I would assemble the water pieces to make a base and that worked until it was complete because it turned out kind of flimsy. I decided to take two of the side flaps of the box and use them as a base for more support to solve that problem. The next problem that occurred was when I went to make the palm tree. I started making the pieces for the tree, sort of like flat pieces that I cut to make wrap around and then I realized I wasn't sure how to make them stay together. After trying a couple things I figured out how to put them together and it worked out fine. I didn't really have any major problems, just small decisions that came up along the way.
I believe that I learned a few things from this project. One thing that I learned would have been the fact that someone can do a lot with a box. I was stuck for a while on what to do, but once I figured out an idea it was a lot easier. Also, seeing every ones' projects in class showed me how many ideas people had out there to make something out of a simple box. Another thing I learned from this project would be that different boxes will give you really different results sometimes. I learned that when we were discussing every ones' projects in class. Lastly, I learned that expressing one's creativity can be as simple as cutting up a box. This project really taught me to think outside the box.
